Dr. Herme Angeles, Jr., Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, who leads the overseas contingent, said most of the 27 visiting Fil-Am and American doctors and other medical volunteers are members of the Philippine Medical Society of Northern California, with most coming from the Seton Medical Center in Daly City, San Mateo County, California where Filipinos form the largest ethnic resident community, comprising 31.6% of the total population.
Among them are Dr. Tom Feeney, a cardiologist and his wife Karen, an emergency room doctor whose children Jordan, 14; Colin, 11; and Nicole, 6, chose to volunteer as aides for the medical mission instead of enjoying their school vacation. Also in the contingent are Dr. Robert Perez, a general surgeon, and his wife, Karen Louise, a breast surgeon, of Burlingane, California.
"This mission is a joint project of the local governments of Bukidnon and Baungon, and many, many private donors led by JCAlvarez and Sons Foundation through Baungon Vice Mayor Pedro "Adong" Alvarez, which together with the Seton Hospital Foundation provided for the free medicines and surgical instruments," Angeles said. "We have sent five shipments of medicines of 11-12 boxes each for this mission."
Angeles said the mission is also donating 36 motorized beds for the Baungon Provincial Hospital. This hospital has yet to be operationalized as a hospital and is now operating only as an out-patient facility.
Dr. Edgard Castro, oncologist; chief of internal medicine in V. Luna Hospital, is among the other doctor-volunteers coming from Leyte, Manila, Palawan and Davao, said Dr. Ben Valdez, a trauma and ICU surgeon from Davao Medical Center, who organized the mission under the auspices of the Maharlika Charity Foundation, Inc. (MCFI), a non-stock, non-profit charity foundation based in Davao City which provides free surgical services to the poor and the needy. The Maharlika corps of volunteers and its "Dapitan" Mobile Operating Theater Van have provided free medical and surgical services to 19 areas in Mindanao.
During its first day last June 30, the mission was scheduled to accommodate some 2,000 patients from four adjacent barangays of Baungon. Medical and dental procedures and minor surgery were performed at the Baungon gymnasium while major surgery (left palate, thyroid, EENT and maxilo-facial) was done at the Maharlika Mobile
Operating Theatre Van deployed at the Manolo Fortich Provincial Hospital and the Baungon Provincial Hospital where four beds were deployed for hernia and hydrocele patients.
